Are There Rules For Being PLAID?

I feel like this fabric wanted to be a PLAID when it grew up but someone started cutting at it before it had the chance to grow.

It almost looks like a gingham print was starting but then someone said "nah, everyone hates gingham" and turned a corner into plaid and then painted some yellow thing stripes to test it out and then the idea died right there. Or did it dye?
